Seven killed in Nepal as army and rebels clash
Defence officials In Nepal say seven people have been killed in fighting between security forces and Maoist rebels who aim to topple the constitutional monarchy and elected government.
A defence ministry spokesman says soldiers killed five rebels in four separate clashes in west Nepal.
The rebels also killed two soldiers in east Nepal.
In November, Nepal declared a state of emergency and ordered its army to crush the rebels after they broke a truce and launched attacks on security forces. Nepal's parliament is scheduled to vote next week on the government's request to extend the state of emergency for another three months. About 550 people have died in the conflict since November, taking the total number of deaths in the rebellion to more than 2,350 in six years.
