Afghan leader says no political motive behind violence

Afghanistan's interim leader, Hamid Karzai, says he'll do everything necessary to ensure security after the assassination of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister and an attack on British security forces.

He said the Cabinet was united in being prepared to ask for a stronger commitment from the International Security Assistance Force if it felt this was necessary.

Mr Karzai insisted there was no political motive behind either the death of Abdul Rahman or the shooting at the International Security Assistance Force security post.

But he said those responsible would be brought to justice.

"There's no way that we will let Afghanistan go the ways of the past. These guys who think that they can go away with looting or murder ... those days are over. So if I see that Afghanistan is not allowed to live peacefully I will ask for the changing of the mandate of the ISAF. I will ask for every measure to bring security to the Afghan people. "
