Maoist rebels kill 53 in western Nepal

Maoist rebels have killed at least 53 people, including a district chief, in a new wave of attacks in troubled Nepal.

The AFP news agency says it has an unconfirmed report that as many as 50 Maoist rebels also died in the attacks.

The heaviest loss of life was in the west of Nepal where an airport and district administration headquarters were stormed and 48 people, mostly security guards, killed.

The rebels have been fighting since 1996 to overthrow Nepal's constitutional monarchy.
