A delay for Afghanistan's Haj pilgrims is easing
Thousands of Afghans have left for the annual pilgrimage to Mecca thanks to last-minute international efforts to get them to Saudi Arabia after a week of frustration over cancelled flights.
The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Britain and Pakistan have joined efforts to transport the pilgrims by supplying planes that will establish an air link to Saudi Arabia. Afghan interim leader Hamid Karzai says his government is working non-stop to provide planes and has started efforts to capture the alleged assassins of Aviation and Tourism Minister Abdul Rahman.
He was murdered at Kabul's airport last Thrusday and first reports blamed angry pilgrims who were frustrated by the delays, but Mr Karzai insists the killing was the result of a personnal vendetta involving several senior officials.
