UN human rights envoy wraps up trip to Burma
United Nations human rights envoy Paulo Sergio Pinheiro has wrapped up his latest visit to Burma, as opposition pro-democracy figures expressed satisfaction with the mission.
During his trip, Mr Pinheiro met with democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi at her home were she has been under house arrest for more than a year. Senior members of her National League for Democracy attended the three-hour meeting, which party spokesman U Lwin said was "satisfactory" compared to earlier talks which had been hurried.
Meanwhile Burma's Senior General Than Shwe delivered a speech at a meeting of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, a pro-junta social group with some 18 million members. Than Shwe said the military government was committed to establishing a peaceful democratic state despite facing numerous obstacles posed by "internal and external" destructive elements.
