President Bush calls for talks with North Korea
US President George W. Bush has called for talks with North Korea, playing down suggestions that the communist state could become a military target in Washington's war on terrorism.
Mr Bush used a visit to South Korea to reiterate concerns over the nature of the c regime, in Pyongyang but he also stressed that he was open to talks and denied there were any plans for military action against the North.
The switch of emphasis comes after criticism from US allies of Mr Bush's labelling of Iran, Iraq and North Korea as an "axis of evil."
The growing rift over the direction of war on terror widened yesterday when a French minister accused Mr Bush of engaging in "Texas-style diplomacy."
