US pays tribute to Australian soldier killed in Afghanistan

United States Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, has paid tribute to an Australian soldier killed in Afghanistan last Saturday.

Washington correspondent, Leigh Sales, reports that Mr Rumsfeld emphasized his appreciation for Australia's role in the war on terrorism:

"The Defence Secretary offered his condolences to the family of S.A.S. Sergeant Andrew Russell, who was killed on February 16. Mr Rumsfeld again thanked Australia for its contribution in Afghanistan, and said that both the Australian and British forces are to be commended. "THE COURAGE AND THE COMMITTMENT AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF THESE AND OTHER COALITION PARTNERS ARE VALUED GREATLY BY THE UNITED STATES." Donald Rumsfeld says Sergeant Russell was involved in an important mission and that the U.S. deeply feels his loss.
