Afghanistan agrees to immediate return of illegal immigrants

Afghanistan has agreed to accept the immediate return of Afghans who arrive in Indonesia or Australia illegally.

Graeme Dobell reports that the agreement was reached at the people smuggling conference which has ended in Bali.

"Australia's Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, and Indonesia's Foreign Minister, Hassan Wirajuda, announced the deal after talks with Afghanistan's Minister for Justice, Abdul Rahim Karimi. A statement from the three Ministers agreed that one of the post conflict issues in Afghanistan is the voluntary return of Afghan refugees. Indonesia and Australia say they'll seek an effective returns policy using cash incentives, and help with resettlement and rehabilitation. The statement says Afghanistan has agreed to accept the immediate return from now on of Afghans, not defined as refugees, who arrive in Indonesia or Australia by illegal means."
