Senior US official believes Osama Bin Laden is alive
US officials have been quoted in the New York Times as believing Osama bin Laden probably survived the bombing assaults on Afghanistan.
They say the alleged mastermind of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States is likely to be hiding in remote terrain on the Afghan-Pakistani border.
A senior official said the United States was quite certain Bin Laden was alive and that capturing or killing him was not likely in the short-run, but rather a long term proposition.
The official also told the New York Times Washington believed it had eliminated about one third of the core leadership of Bin Laden's al-Qaeda network.
