Malaysia defends its crackdown on illegal immigrants
Malaysia's government is defending its crackdown on illegal immigrants from Indonesia and elsewhere, saying they are a burden on the state.
Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar says his country has been swamped by about one million illegal immigrants, which now make up five percent of the population.
He says this is causing a burden on social, economic and political systems and Malaysians are concerned about the problems that can result.
Thousands of people have been arrested and hundreds of homes destroyed in an increasingly aggressive crackdown on illegal immigrants.
