Strong action promised against people smuggling in Asia Pacific region

The international conference on people smuggling has ended in Bali with a declaration promising a strong offensive against the illegal trafficking of people in the Asia Pacific region.

The conference agreed to more intelligence-sharing, improved links between law agencies, better border and visa controls and strategies to return illegal migrants to their countries of origin.

Australia's foreign minister, Alexander Downer, says the conference shows a strong international will to attack people-smuggling and trans-national crime.

"More needs to be done to improve law enforcement ... to improve the legal structures to address people smuggling ... to make sure that there's better cooperation between our various agencies, intelligence agencies, law enforcement agencies and the like. So I think the consensus that there clearly was at this conference, to take decisive measures to address people smuggling was quite a remarkable thing."
