Pacific urged to update anti-people smuggling laws

Pacific nations have been urged to update laws and increase ocean surveillance to prevent an increase in people smuggling to the region.

The Secretary-General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Noel Levi, says people smugglers could send their human cargo to the Pacific if they are prevented from entering countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia.

Mr Levi, who's at the regional people smuggling conference in Bali, says Pacific nations must move in line with other countries.

"When other regions start to improve their surveillance systems and their laws and so forth, if we don't move along with all the others to enact modern laws and so forth and put in proper surveillance systems, we're likely to be the loose or the weak link and that could attract people smugglers for processing people through the region."
