Relatives of Tiananmen Square victims renew their plea to Parliament China's national parliament has been asked to investigate its chairman, Li Peng, over his role in the student killings in Tiananmen Square 13 years ago. "The 114 signatures on an open letter are mostly from relatives of those killed during the government's suppression of the student protest. The letter addressed to the nearly 3,000 members of the National Peoples Congress calls on them to bring to account the NPC Chairman and number two in the Chinese leadership, Li Peng. We will not relax, the letter says, until he is brought to trial in a court of law. A lobby group comprising mothers of victims tried three years to have Chinese prosecutors investigate the incident, but the official version of events that has not changed to this day is that the students were counter revolutionaries whose actions had threatened the state. The congress opens on Tuesday and runs all week." 03/03/2002 00:20:12 | ABC Radio Australia News
