Australian and Chinese officials investigate reports of kidnapping Australian and Chinese officials in Beijing are investigating reports the four-year-old child of an Australian academic couple based in the capital has been kidnapped. "The Australian Embassy in Beijing has been in contact with police and the local security bureau following what embassy officials believe to be a clear-cut case of abduction. Four-year old Sarah Zhu was apparently taken from near the child care center at Beijing University late on Tuesday afternoon, and police have confirmed they're investigating a kidnapping and have begun citywide search. Sarah's father Zhu Xiao Yang is an Australian national and a well-known university professor whose work with poverty alleviation has meant regular work in China, this time under a fellowship at Beijing University. Embassy officials say kidnapping of foreign nationals in China is extremely rare, but despite occasional government crackdowns, child stealing remains a common problem across large parts of China." 28/02/2002 09:40:21 | ABC Radio Australia News
