Reinforcements being sent to eastern Afghanistan

Afghanistan's interim authority is sending one-thousand soldiers to the eastern province of Paktia, to help the Afghan and coalition forces fighting al-Qaeda and Taliban remnants.

South Asia correspondent Jonathan Harley reports:

"At least a dozen armoured vehicles including six tanks were seen heading from the capital Kabul to the frontline near the eastern city of Gardez, in Paktia Province. Afghanistan's most powerful warlords including Deputy Defence Minister Abdul Rashid Dostum, are being called on to send troops. The move corresponds with the United States calling in fresh troops, attack helicopters and low-flying ground attack planes. As Operation Anaconda enters its seventh day, the Taliban and al-Qaeda are reportedly mounting guerrilla-style techniques used by mujahideen fighters who fought invading Soviet forces during the 1980's, they're making the most of well-hidden caves high in the mountains."
