Hundreds want to apply for asylum in CNMI
More than 500 foreign workers, mostly Chinese and Bangladeshi nationals, have attended a meeting in the Northern Marianas to get information on their rights as asylum seekers.
However, many expecting asylum application forms went home empty-handed because the lawyers prepared only 50 applications.
The meeting was organised by lawyers, who hope negotiations between the CNMI and the federal government will guarantee the foreign workers their rights.
However, the government has expressed concern over the possibility that some foreign workers might take advantage of the situation and file frivolous asylum applications to gain access to the U.S.
The asylum treaty to which the United States is a signatory, also applies in the CNMI.
However, the government says there are still questions over who is going to pay for the expenses of accommodating the asylum seekers pending a decision on their applications.
