Tribunal on human rights abuses in East Timor, to start tomorrow

Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri has signed two decrees on witness protection and victim compensation

The president signed the decrees on the eve of a landmark tribunal for human rights rights abuses in East Timor in 1999, which is due to start on Thursday at the Central Jakarta district court.

Three army generals, a police general and several middle-ranking officers are among 18 defendants in the tribunal.

If convicted, they could face between 10 years in jail and death.

The tribunal will also hear cases related to the 1984 killing by troops of Muslim demonstrators in Jakarta's Tanjung Priok district.
