New Zealand says East Timor murder sentence too light
New Zealand has described the six-year jail sentence given to a pro-Jakarta militiaman for the killing of a New Zealand United Nations peacekeeper in East Timor, as too light.
An Indonesian court sentenced, Yakobus Bere, for his role in the murder of Private Leonard Manning in East Timor in July, 2000.
New Zealand's Prime Minister, Helen Clark, expressed the government's disappointment at what she says is the short length of sentence given the gravity of the crime.
She says Wellington will ask the Indonesian authorities whether they will look at grounds for an appeal.
The prosecution has seven days to appeal the sentence.
