Vietnam to scale back a dam in northwestern mountains
Vietnam is set to sharply scale back a controversial dam project in the northwestern mountains which would have displaced up to 100,000 people after criticism from members of the NAtional Assembly.
Under a new proposal, the height of the Son La dam will be reduced from 265 metres to 215, slashing the number of people expected to lose their homes to just 16,000.
The head of the National Assembly's office, Vu Mao, says Assembly mmbers made certain comments about the height of the dam and so the government is planning to submit a fresh proposal for a dam of 215 metres or less.
He says the original proposal would have displaced a lot of people, particularly from the Tay minority, which could damage this community's traditions and cultural identity.
