South Korea and US launch military war games
South Korea and the United States have launched their largest ever war games, which North Korea has condemned as preparations for a strike against the communist state.
The drills, which run until March 27th, will be the biggest joint military exercises after US and South Korean forces merged two separate drills for the first time.
US officials have confirmed that the exercises have begun, but refused to disclose any specific figures on the number of troops involved in the manoeuvres.
The Korean peninsula remains the world's last Cold War frontier with nearly two million troops ready for combat along the tense frontier. The North's communist party newspaper has accused the US-South Korean exercise as "a dangerous exercise aimed to invade the North.
But US ambassador to South Korea Thomas Hubbard said the exercises would continue to thwart the North's threat.
