Police continue to monitor Woomera detention centre

Police in South Australia have arrested 13 asylum seekers after a breakout by detainees at the Woomera immigrant detention centre.

An unknown number of asylum seekers escaped from the centre when around one-thousand protestors stormed the complex.

Police have also charged 10 of the protestors with aiding and abetting those who escaped.

Chief Inspector Brian Fahy says police will monitor the situation closely this morning.

We will be maintaining our monitoring role and we will be responding to any actions by the protesters as required. Now that of course depends on their activities and we fully support peaceful assembly but when that assembly gets out of control as it has, we'll need to respond accordingly as to whatever's occurring at the time.
