UN launches a project to rebuild Kabul

The United Nations has launched a project to rebuild Afghanistan's capital, Kabul which will provide badly needed employment for up to 25,000 people.

Six month's worth of funding has already been provided, but it's estimated that the rebuilding will take 20 years to complete.

The launch ceremony took place in the ruins of what was once a residential area where now only a few pieces of wall remain, the rest razed in the conflict which beset the country between 1992 and 1996.

If construction goes according to plan, thousands of Kabul residents who abandoned their houses during the years of conflict may soon be able to return home.

Other projects are underway to reconnect power lines, provide street lighting, clean the river bed and plant trees.
