Five killed and 39 injured during gunbattle in Indian Kashmir
Three militants, a security officer, and a civilian were killed, and 39 people injured during a gunbattle and grenade blast in Indian Kashmir.
The encounter took place in the village of Jageer, south of Srinagar. A spokesman for India's Border Security Force said army personnel, backed by counter-insurgency police, stopped a passenger bus following a tip-off. He says when the passengers were asked to come out for frisking, three militants managed to run into a neighbouring house.
Officials say reinforcements were sent in, a cordon was thrown around the house, and the militants asked to surrender.
Security forces returned fire, killing three militants, and a civilian.
Military officials say as security force personnel were searching the scene a grenade attached to one of the bodies exploded, injuring 35 security force personnel.
