Blast in Indonesia's Ambon wounds up to 20 witnesses
An explosion in the eastern Indonesian port city of Ambon has wounded up to 20 people, some seriously and sparked a protest by thousands of Christians.
Reuters newsagency says Ambon has been fairly calm since Muslims and Christians signed a peace deal in February, aimed at halting violence that has killed at least five-thousand people across the island chain in the past three years.
Reuter quotes witnesses as saying the explosion occurred in a Christian quarter of the city, prompting thousands of residents in the area to converge on the nearby governor's office.
Police have confirmed the explosion, but gave no details, and would not say if it was caused by a bomb.
It's unclear if there were any fatalities and hospital officials could not be reached for comment.
Witnesses say police fired warning shots over the heads of the protesters, who also set fire to a part of the governor's compound.
