Twenty Six Maoist rebels killed in Nepal

The Maoist rebels in Nepal are continuing a wave of attacks on security posts in their campaign to overthow the constitutional monarchy and set up a communist republic.

At least 24 rebels have been killed over the past 24 hours in fresh gunbattles across Nepal.

A defence ministry official says 13 guerrillas were killed in a major clash in the Bardiya district after rebels set off a landmine in an abmush, killing five soldiers.

The other rebels were killed in separate gunbattles with troops across the Himalayan nation which is under a state of emergency with the army granted sweeping powers of search and detention to crush the insurgency.
