New Zealand lifts sanctions against Afghanistan
New Zealand has removed sanctions imposed last year against Afghanistan.
However, has kept trade and travel restrictions against the al Qaeda network and its Taliban backers.
New Zealand's acting Prime Minister, Jim Anderton, says the restrictions were lifted after the New Zealand cabinet moved to implement a United Nations security resolution adopted in January.
Mr Anderton says the resolution in effect imposes sanctions on Osama Bin Laden, al Qaeda and the Taliban, but lifts sanctions against the state of Afghanistan.
The regulations also ban entry or transit through New Zealand of bin Laden, members of the Taliban or al Qaeda and associated people.
New Zealand has sent a small number of special forces troops to Afghanistan as part of the U-S led coalition.
