Vietnam defends its policy of settling ethnic Vietnamese
Vietnam has defended its policy of settling ethnic Vietnamese in the restive central highlands, saying it had every right to move new settlers to the region despite a wave of hilltribe protests last year.
The deputy head of the Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas Commission, Tran Luu Hai, said the government had a responsibility to move people to other areas if their current place of settlement can't provide them with the basic necessities of life.
Mr Hai said every Vietnamese citizen had a right to reside in Vietnam.
He cited the case of 100 ethnic Vietnamese families who were moved to the highland province of Kontum after their home village in Vinh Phuc province was destroyed in a 2001 landslide.
Since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, well over a million ethnic Vietnamese have moved to the highlands.
The influx has left the region's indigenous hilltribes a minority in all four provinces.
