Vietnam police bust ring trafficking virgins to Cambodia

Police in Ho Chi Minh City have reportedly detained two women on suspicion of trafficking dozens of Vietnamese virgins to Cambodian brothels for less than 350 US dollars each.

The commercial capital's Tuoi Tre daily says a 44 year old woman and her adopted daughter were arrested in a guesthouse on Thursday along with three girls they are accused of pimping.

Police charge that since 2001 the pair had preyed on scores of young peasant girls who had moved to Vietnam's biggest city in search of work in its myriad sweatshops and karaoke bars.

After the girls lost their virginity to high-paying clients in Cambodia, a butterfly was tattooed onto their stomachs to mark their lower value, and they were allegedly forced to work another three months for the pair on their return to Vietnam.

Aid workers say the majority of women working in Cambodia's huge sex industry are Vietnamese, many of them underage.
