Maoist strike brings Kathmandu to a standstill

A nationwide general strike called by Maoist rebels has reportedly brought life in Nepal's capital to an almost complete standstill.

Traffic on the streets of Kathmandu was thin despite a government appeal for people to ignore the five-day strike call.

Opposition parties and business leaders had joined with the government to appeal to the rebels to call off the strike.

The Maoists, who are fighting to topple the constitutional monarchy, called the action to press the Prime Minister to hold talks on redrafting the constitution.
