Whaling and trade to head Japan-NZ talks next week
New Zealand officials say whaling and trade look set to top the agenda in inter-government talks when Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi makes his first official visit to New Zealand next week.
The 16-hour visit starting on Thursday May 2nd has yet to be formally announced, but is the final stop on a tour which will also include Vietnam, East Timor, and Australia.
Japan is New Zealand's third largest trading partner, and a point of difference is New Zealand's opposition to Japan's latest bid to resume commercial whaling.
Officials in Wellington said that at talks with New Zealand Prime Minister, Helen Clark, Mr Koizumi was expected to outline his proposals for closer ties with Southeast Asia, ultimately leading to the formation of an East Asian cooperative community.
