Talks on police issues in East Timor
Police officials from Australia, East Timor and Indonesia have held their first ever trilateral talks in the East Timorese capital Dili, to discuss a wide range of regional security issues.
According to the AFP news agency, representatives of the East Timor Police Service say the meetings on Wednesday were constructive and resulted in an agreement by which Australia and Indonesia will place full-time police liaison officers in Dili in order to further trilateral cooperation.
The United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor says topics discussed included efforts to increase cooperation, especially in the fight against cross-border crimes.
The talks stemmed from a high-level meeting on the Indonesian resort island of Bali in February that was attended by UNTAET chief Sergio Vieira de Mello and representatives from Australia and Indonesia.
