US returns ancient relics to Cambodia
Two ancient Khmer artifacts have been returned to Cambodia as part of international efforts to resolve disputes around antiquities missing from third world countries.
The Honolulu Academy of Arts in the US state of Hawaii presented a ninth-century stone head of the Hindu god Shiva and a 12th-century stone head of an asura or demon to the Cambodian government.
It's the third time the US has returned Khmer artifacts to Cambodia.
US amabassador to Cambodia Kent Wiedemann says Cambodia and the US are hoping to sign a bilateral agreement under the 1970 Unesco convention on the protection of cultural property, which will mandate the repatriation of stolen and looted art objects. Most of the Cambodian antiques were looted during the civil wars which ravaged the country between 1970 and 1979.
