Singapore PM, Chinese VP call for ASEAN talks

Singapore's Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and visiting Chinese vice president, Hu Jintao, have called for early negotiations on the proposed ASEAN-China free trade agreement.

Both leaders discussed ways to advance the proposed FTA during their two-hour meeting.

Leaders of China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations last year agreed to work out the creation of such a trade bloc within the next 10 years, which would cover a market of one-point-seven billion people.

Mr Hu said the Free Trade Agreement framework would boost economic growth for East Asia.

Mr Goh, whose country has sealed FTAs with New Zealand and Japan and is negotiating an accord with the United States, expressed support for an early start of talks for the ASEAN-China FTA.
