Chinese leader-in-waiting arrives at start of landmark US visit
China's leader-in-waiting, Vice President Hu Jintao, has arrived in Hawaii at the start of his critical maiden visit to the United States.
The visit is seen as a landmark in ties between the two powers as it marks the first trip to the United States by Mr Hu, who is touted as the likely successor of Chinese President Jiang Zemin.
Rival protesters supporting and opposing his visit lined the roadway leading to his hotel.
Between 60 and 70 pro-Beijing Chinese students studying in Hawaii faced off around 24 supporters of mainland China's rival Taiwan and a handful of practitioners of the Falun Gong movement who came out to oppose Mr Hu's visit. The 24-hour stop in Hawaii is aimed mainly at giving the vice president a break from his hectic schedule ahead of landmark meetings with top US officials including President George W. Bush in Washington.
