Buddist monks meet to tackle the issue smoking
Buddhist monks from Thailand, Sri Lanka and Cambodia have met to find ways to tackle the spread of tobacco-related disease, including making pagodas smoke-free. The move follows striking statistics that the leading cause of death of Thai monks is tobacco-related diseases.
The World Health Organisation said similar statistics could be expected from Cambodia where tobacco use is also high among the Buddhist clergy.
Sri Lankan monks are banned from smoking and temples are smoke-free.
WHO said Thai and Cambodian monks were striving for the same. The monks are in Phnom Pehn as part of a two-day meeting to identify how Buddhist teachings could be used to combat smoking-related illness and how it would apply to tobacco marketing and to helping people remain clear of nicotine addiction.
