Thailand and Australia to discuss free trade

Thailand and Australia will begin formal negotiations next month for a free trade agreement when Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, visits Canberra.

Thailand's Ambassador, Sawanit Kongsiri, says the governments have completed a study on a bilateral free trade treaty.

The negotiations will be the second in Southeast Asia. Australia began talks with Singapore on a bilateral trade treaty in November, 2000, and predicts that a deal with Singapore will be finalised in the next few months.

Prime Minister Thaksin is coming at the end of May for talks with John Howard and you will have heard that the joint scope study on the free trade area between our two countries has now been finished. And it's expected the two Prime Ministers will give their imprint to the decision to start the negotiations on a free trade area between our two countries.
