US defence secretary urges Congress to lift Indonesia sanctions

The American Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has urged Congress to ease restrictions on military relations with Indonesia.

Speaking after a meeting with his Indonesian counterpart, Matori Abdul Djalil, Mr Rumsfeld says Jakarta is dealing with past human rights violations in an orderly way.

The US Congress barred funding for military training or arms sales between the two countries after the violence associated with East Timor's vote for independence in 1999.

But Mr Rumsfeld is now making the case for the restoration of those ties.

They are addressing the human rights issues in an orderly democratic way, and that the way the legal system works is not something as the minister indicated, that governments intervene.
