America wants to resume military contacts with Indonesia

The U-S Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld wants to resume military ties with Indonesia.

Military training and arms sales to Jakarta were stopped after the Indonesian military was implicated in massacres in East Timor following the independence ballot in 1999.

Mr Rumsfeld is calling on the Congree to ease restrictions saying Jakarta is dealing with past human rights violations in an orderly, democratic way.

He was speaking after meeting with his Indonesian counterpart Matori Abdul Jalil in Washington.

The steps that the Indonesian government has taken and that the Minister has been discussing here, er we are hopeful we will be helpful with the United States Congress given the fact that it was human rights violations of course that led to the restrictions and we are of the view that it's time for them to be adjusted substantially.
