Hybrid rice said to be the solution to Asian hunger and poverty
Hybrid rice is being promoted as a new hope in the fight against the massive hunger and poverty in Asia at an international symposium on the grain in Vietnam .
The Chinese scientists who developed the strain, Professor Yuan Long Ping, says hybrid rice has promised a very bright future for food security and the second generation of super hybrid rice, will produce a record yield of 12 tonnes per hectares.
The thee-day international symposium, organised by Philippines-based International Rice Research Institute has gathered more than 200 delegates from rice growing countries in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi.
Hybrid rice is developed by combining different strains of rice into new varieties which have improved qualities, such as higher yields or the ability to grow in harsher environments
It was successfully developed in China 25 years ago. Since then, the technology has been used in 50 percent of rice-growing areas in China, which amount to some 30 million hectares
It has now been adopted by more than 20 countries worldwide.
