Indonesia continues to argue case for resumed US military links
Indonesia's Defence Minister Matori Abdul Djalil has continued to press the case for revitalised military ties with the United States, meeting a senior State Department official in Washingtonon.
The meeting with Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage came two days after US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld urged Congress to ease the restrictions on military relations imposed after pro-Jakarta militias went on a rampage in East Timor in 1999.
Correspondents say some State Department officials are believed to be more cautious on the issue than those in the Pentagon, arguing that Indonesia has not done enough to purge the armed forces of those guilty of human rights abuses.
After the talks, a State Department spokeswoman said Mr Armitage and Mr Matori discussed the importance of military reform in the context of both sides' hopes to improve the military-to-military relationship.
