Former Khmer Rouge commander now in jail in Phnom Penh
A former Khmer Rouge commander has been whisked off to jail in Phnom Penh, after appearing in court charged with the 1994 kidnapping and murders of three backpackers including Australian David Wilson.
General Sam Bith - who was described as looking pale and ill - was escorted by 10 armed guards into the courtroom where he was also charged with destruction of property, forming an illegal armed force, robbery and terrorism.
General Bith was arrested on Wednesday and charged over a train ambush in southern Cambodia in which 13 Cambodians were killed.
The backpackers were held for two months and a ransom demanded before they were executed on the apparent instructions of Khmer Rouge leader, Pol Pot.
