Toll mounts as Sri Lanka troops withdraw
The death toll among Sri Lankan troops is set to rise above 200 as the army withdraws from a costly offensive against Tamil Tiger rebels.
Losses among troops were officially placed at 187 killed and 860 wounded, but military sources said the death toll could reach 217.
The total number of casualties, including those with minor injuries, was put at 16-hundred.
The separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam guerrillas who put up fierce resistance to the military offensive and beat back the troops by Saturday have returned the bodies of 30 troopers through the Red Cross.
The guerillas put their own losses at 75 killed.
