Norweigan attempt to broker peace in Sri Lanka suffers major blow

Norway's attempt to broker a peace deal in Sri Lanka has suffered a major blow with Tamil tiger rebels calling off their unilateral truce.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam said they had taken the decision because the Sri Lankan Government had intensified land, sea and air attacks causing heavy casualties.

Neeraj Bali reports.

Sri Lankan defence forces are on high alert, fearing an escalation of fighting in the northern areas of the island nation. The Sri Lankaan government was expected to announce a timetable for Norway-backed peace talks with the Tamil Tigers at the end of this month. In a reported statement, the rebels have accused the government of killing over one hundred and sixty of its fighters in the four months of the truce. The tigers have also blamed the international community for not supporting their peace initiative but say they will support Norway's peace attempts
