Troops launch new offensive in Sri Lanka
Troops in Sri Lanka have launched a new offensive against the Tamil Tiger rebels after they called off a unilateral ceasefire.
Neeraj Bali reports:
Troops and armour backed by the Sri Lankan airforce have reportedly started moving into rebel-held territory in the Jaffna peninsula. A government spokesman said the offensive aims to take more areas from the rebels and push them back. The attack, which follows the end of a four-month long unilateral rebel ceasefire, has affected Norway's efforts to broker peace. Until a few days ago, the government was expected to announce a timetable for Norway-backed peace talks with the rebels. The Tamil Tigers have accused the government of killing more than 160 of its fighters during the ceasefire.
