Sri Lankan rebels criticise gov't for heading toward "war"
Separatist Tamil Tiger rebels have criticised the Sri Lankan government for triggering what they term a "full-blown war" as Norway tried to salvage its bid to end the conflict. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam say Colombo has shattered the Norweigan peace efforts by launching a major offensive at the end of the rebels' four-month-long unilateral truce on April 24th.
The Tigers say that by unleashing a major military offensive against rebel positions in Jaffna, President Chandrika Kumaratunga has seriously jeopardised the Norwegian peace initiative.
Norway's special envoy Erik Solheim held talks with President Kumaratunga earlier today.
There was no immediate word either from either side about the outcome of the talks.
