Vote for Indonesian Vice President to be held today
Indonesia's national assembly has started screening five vice-presidential candidates ahead of an election for the position later today.
Among the candidates are two retired army generals, Bambang Sulsilo Yudhoyono and Agum Gumelar, both of whom are considered reformists and who served in the cabinet of ousted president Adurrahman Wahid. Akbar Tanjung, the head of Golkar, the former ruling party founded by former Indonesian dictator Suharto, has also registered as a candidate. Meanwhile, Indonesia's new president, Megawati Sukarnoputri, has left Jakarta to visit the grave of her father, the country's founding president, Sukarno.
A Presidential official says Ms Megawati is travelling to Blitar in East Java and is due to return later today.
