Wahid predicts return to authoritarian rule in Indonesia

In his first media interview since being sacked as Indonesia's president, Abdurrahman Wahid has predicted his successor Megawati Sukarnoputri will lead the country back to authoritarian rule.

Speaking from the Presidential Palace where he has remained since being dismissed on Monday,he also admitted he had underestimated his enemies' determination to unseat him.

Mr Wahid says his fall was due to generals in the armed forces being angered by his efforts at reforming the corruption-ridden military...

The former president has also confirmed he will be leaving the presidential palace tomorrow, and heading to the United States for medical treatment.

"The hawks with the armed forces will try to impose the status quo and they used the quarrels between the politicians to set up their own, let's say...rule.."
