Indonesia's MPR begins special session to elect vice-president

Indonesia's supreme legislature... the MPR.... has opened a special session to elect a new vice president to replace Megawati Sukarnoputri after her elevation to the presidency.

The five candidates include two reformist retired army generals Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Agum Gumelar as well as the head of the Golkar party, Akbar Tanjung, who is also speaker of the lower house.

The other two are the head of the Muslim-oriented United Development Party Hamzah Haz and Siswono Yudho Husodo, a minister in the cabinet of former president Suharto.

Ms Megawati, who became president on Monday after the MPR sacked Abdurrahman Wahid, was not present.
