US finishes assessing Taiwanese army's combat capability

The United States has finished assessing the Taiwanese army's combat capability in preparation for deciding on what arms to sell to the island next year.

The review focused on Taiwan's readiness to fend off a naval invasion and the army's capacity to fight a joint war with other forces.

The deal, which infuriated Taiwan's rival China, followed a two-year US review of Taiwanese air force and naval capabilities.

China regards Taiwan as an integral part of its territory and has threatened to invade should Taipei ever declare formal independence.
