US to tread lightly in Pakistan
The United States says it will tread lightly in Pakistan as it moves to retaliate for the September 11 terrorist attacks fearing that unrest could destabilize the volatile nuclear power.
Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, says the US recognizes Pakistan's political fragility and will avoid acting in a way that could inflame anti-Western or anti-government sentiment.
Mr Armitage lauded Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf for his decision to cooperate with a US-led anti-terrorism coalition.
But he says the steps Islamabad is taking as Washington considers striking terrorist targets in neighboring Afghanistan will not be made public. Pakistan's co-operation has prompted demonstrations in the Islamic country where sympathy runs high for America's prime suspects in the attacks: Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda network, and their Afghan hosts, the Taliban militia.
